A common customer inquiry we receive at Vector Security are issues related to internet/WiFi connection with smart home devices after changing the router. If this is an issue you’ve experienced, you’re not alone. More than 40% of homeowners experience connectivity issues, coverage gaps, and slow speeds after installing a new router.
To better understand your smart home devices and to help mitigate these issues, consider the following:
Your Smart Home Ecosystem
All your smart home devices, whether it be security cameras, laptops, smartphones, motion sensors, smart lights, etc., are part of an interconnected ecosystem, with each device serving a specific purpose in the ecosystem.
At the top of the proverbial smart home ecosystem is your network router. The network router is the source of your home’s WiFi. It is the one device all other internet-capable devices must connect to work properly.
The Issue
When homeowners upgrade or change their home router, it disconnects all of the smart home devices. These devices do not automatically reconnect when the new router is installed, which throws off security monitoring services, and other smart devices connected to the router.
The Solution
First, you want to make sure the router is properly installed. The easiest way is to have a professional come and install it for you. However, if you go the DIY route, just remember to carefully follow the installation and setup instructions for the router.
Next, you’re going to need to reset the connection for all of your IoT (internet of things) devices. Each device’s setup is different, which is why it is important to keep and follow the user guides, so please DON’T throw those away. If you can’t find the user guide, then you can always search for your device online. And if reconnecting a Vector Security device, you can always visit our products page to learn more.
Lastly, it is important to note that changing your network’s password also disconnects your IoT devices. So, don’t forget to update the password for all of your devices as well to reconnect to the router.
